Anti-discrimination

As an employer you will need to understand obligation under both Federal and Northern Territory legislation. The legislation promotes equality of opportunity for all people in the Territory, and provides remedies for people who have suffered unlawful discrimination on the grounds outlined in the legislation.

Both the Northern Territory Anti-Discrimination Commission and the Australian Human Rights Commission can provide information to help employers avoid discrimination during recruitment and ongoing employment.

Apprenticeships

Australian Apprenticeships combine practical work with structured training to give an employee a nationally recognised qualification and the experience they need to get a job in a specific trade or industry.

Apprenticeships and Traineeships are available in a broad range of industries and can be flexibly structured to suit an employer.

The Department of Business and Employment manages and administers programs and funding arrangements for the delivery of vocational education and training in the Northern Territory.

GET VET

Vocational Education and Training provides nationally recognised qualifications in many industries. Training packages are provided by government and private Registered Training Providers (RTO).

Industrial relations encompasses the employment relationship between employers and employees in the workplace.

NT Worksafe

NT Worksafe sets and enforces the workplace safety standards to ensure business meet their responsibilities under the law.

NT Worksafe is responsible for the Territory-wide regulation including:

  • Occupational Health and Safety
  • Prevention
  • Rehabilitation
  • Workers' Compensation
  • Dispute Resolution.

Occupational Health and Safety

Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) legislation and programs seek to prevent workplace death, injury and disease in Northern Territory workplaces.

NT Worksafe are the administrative and regulatory body responsible for Occupational Health and Safety, rehabilitation, workers' compensation and occupational licensing in the Northern Territory. 

Superannuation

Under the Superannuation Guarantee legislation, employers are obliged to pay superannuation contributions for their employees, usually as a percentage of the employees' wage or salary.

Training and development

Both the Commonwealth and the Northern Territory Government through the Department of Business and Employment manages and administers programs and funding arrangements for the delivery of programs and funding arrangements for the delivery of training and education programs. 

  • Oversees and provides funding for the training of apprentices and trainees
  • Provides funds for the public and private training providers to deliver a broad range of vocational education and training qualifications and competencies

Training packages

Training packages are available through Vocational and Educational Training (VET) providers.

Training organisations

Registered Training Organisations (RTO) provide VET training in the Northern Territory.

Workers compensation

It is compulsory for all employers of workers in the Northern Territory to have a current workers' compensation insurance policy with an approved insurer.

A worker is entitled to compensation for personal injury and disease that occurs during the course of employment, caused by an incident arising out of employment or on a journey to or from work.

NT Worksafe works with employers and employees to ensure injured workers have access to medical, pharmaceutical, rehabilitation costs and income support until the injured worker is fit to return to work.
