The Northern Territory is surging towards an exciting economic future. This contemporary new employment strategy, Jobs NT, will position Territorians to address the challenges ahead and take advantage of the opportunities created by this growth.
Jobs NT is a forward focused NT Government initiative that will improve labour market performance and support economic and social growth. It will prepare workers, employers and the wider community to be best placed to contribute to, and benefit from the opportunities associated with economic growth.
Jobs NT brings together current government policies and initiatives into an overarching workforce development structure. It recognises that broad-ranging policies, systems and structures can create and sustain the workforce, providing not only jobs and training, but also targeted help for job seekers and employers.
With a commitment of $1.2 million over three years government will support business, employers, industry and regions to build workforce development strategies. These will reflect the population, taking into account people of all areas, backgrounds and ability. This strategy outlines the comprehensive range of programs and initiatives and includes a detailed action plan with inbuilt measures and targets that will deliver the vision of Jobs NT.
Research and consultation with 190 stakeholders in 2009 as part of the strategy’s development identified three priority groups – Business and Employers, Indigenous Employment, and Young People. Jobs NT works towards ensuring opportunities and support for these priority groups, so that they meet the challenges associated with labour shortages, and foster participation in skills development.
Employment is important for Territorians overall, but it is critical that these three groups be targeted to best meet industry needs and government priorities and tap into a large potential workforce while supporting business growth.
