Plant Industries Internships
Plant Industries now on offer in NT
University of Queensland students undertaking a Bachelor of Agricultural Science or a Bachelor of Applied Sciencecan now take their interest in crops, forestry and horticulture to the Northern Territory.
Northern Territory Department of Regional Development, Primary Industry, Fisheries and Resources (DRDPIFR) are offering internships to third and fourth year undergraduates and Honours students studying agribusiness, agriculture, horticulture and forestry.
The Plant Industries Division provides applied research, development and extension services to facilitate plant-based industry development in the Northern Territory.
Internship placements are available in Darwin, Katherine and Alice Springs and the program is designed to complement the student's area of interest and university studies.
Ash Cooper, University of Queensland pastoral student who is currently completing an internship in Katherine has said that the opportunity has increased his understanding of practices in a new and exciting environment.
"I have had the opportunity to work with some of Australia's leading research scientists and have also travelled extensively throughout the Northern Territory." Mr Cooper said.
"This has given me the opportunity to network with station managers and owners as well as see many of the different landscapes and wildlife of the Northern Territory.
"The internship has laid the foundations upon which I will begin to build a career once I graduate from university. I believe that partaking in the internship in a region other than one close to South-east Queensland will set me apart from other graduates in terms of industry experience" he said.
Mr Cooper receives support on his internship from research station staff and from his academic supervisor, Dr Mark Hohenhaus.
The placement program offers financial support to assist with accommodation, living expenses, along with reimbursement of travel expenses to and from the NT. For more information or to apply for 2009 placement please contact Libby Doney on (08) 89992310, or email libby.doney@nt.gov.au
