Indigenous Business Australia (IBA) plays an important role in creating economic development opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals, families and communities to build assets and wealth. IBA does this through the following programmes;

  • the equity and investments programme (IBA Investments)
  • the home ownership programme (IBA Homes)
  • the business development and assistance programme (IBA Enterprises) and
  • the home ownership on Indigenous land programme (Community Homes)

IBA participates in various whole of government projects such as the provision of accommodation to rural and remote Indigenous communities through the IBA Construction branch.

IBA also provides input to policy formulation and cross government programme development.

The Indigenous Land Corporation (ILC) was established in 1995 by the Australian Parliament. The ILC is an independent statutory authority which provides social, cultural, economic and environmental benefits to Indigenous people by assisting them to acquire land and manage Indigenous-held land. The ILC has a Board of Directors with at least five being Indigenous. The Board sets policy through the National indigenous Land Strategy (NILS).

The role of the Department of Employment, Education and Training is to develop employment and training initiatives that will enhance the social and economic prosperity of the Northern Territory, develop Territory students through preschool, primary, secondary and vocational education and training programs, and manage work health programs to ensure that people in the Territory have a safe working environment.

The Director of National Parks jointly manages the iconic Uluru-Kata Tjuta and KakaduNational Parkswith their Traditional Owners. Kakadu is setting exciting new directions for Indigenous tourism, working on a long-term plan to build sustainable tourism based on its living cultural landscape. In the past two years a host of new Aboriginal businesses have started up, offering bush tucker and night wildlife tours, safari camps and art galleries.
