OUR VISION for the FUTURE

To develop a sustainable Tiwi economy so there are real jobs for all Tiwi and their children’s children.

OUR MISSION

To achieve this vision the Tiwi Islands Economic Development Committee  will focus
on:

  • Growing a sustainable Tiwi economy
  • Identifying real local jobs for local people with award wages and conditions
  • Training the Tiwi workforce and developing local family or individual businesses
  • Developing and maintaining infrastructure to support sustainable development
  • Encouraging Indigenous and non-Indigenous people to live in harmony with our environment.
OUR PRIORITIES


Housing

  • Housing- reduce the costs of construction by manufacturing house components on island
  • Research and commercialise innovative technology relating to design, construction and “life of the dwelling” appropriate to the climate, living conditions and environment of the Tiwi Islands.
  • Utilise the anticipated Housing funding allocation to establish a quality CAL team of Tiwi builders to construct and maintain the housing investment.
  • Ensure all housing stock complies with the Cyclone code and that each community has their own adequate cyclone plan and shelter.
  • Introduce initiatives to improve community safety and harmony.


Road Infrastructure

  • Expansion of road access infrastructure is crucial for project developers (private investors) and for the local people to gain employment at various job sites.
  • Increase Indigenous participation and employment throughout the island communities and the local economy through strategic alliances and business collaborations.
  • Investigate the establishment of a staff/community Bus Service between the communities.


Starting Small Business

  • Work with registered training organisations to ensure courses offered meet the needs and work opportunities of industry and ability of trainees.
  • Determine appropriate methods of establishing small business awareness concepts to demystify small business activities.
  • Encourage innovative approaches to education and training content and innovation in delivery to Indigenous people.
  • Develop capacity within existing and new small enterprises groups to manage their small business proposals in the most efficient and cost effective  manner to maximise investment of time and resources.
  • Consolidate / coordinate / mentor community enterprises to ensure a sustainable level of business literacy and knowledge is developed.
  • Expand Lifelong Learning as an integral part of community living and management of community or family infrastructure.
