Welcome to the Department of Regional Development, Primary Industry, Fisheries and Resources

The Regional Development Unit facilitates the creation of strong regions throughout the Northern Territory in three main ways:

  • Strengthening relationships and facilitating the flow of information between stakeholders, including private enterprise and all levels of government , to support the implementation of key projects
  • Supporting economic growth through funding programs such as the Indigenous Business Development Fund and the Regional Economic Development Fund
  •  Managing nine regionally based economic development committees.

A major priority is Indigenous economic development, which has its own dedicated team of staff.

The Regional Development Unit has its headquarters in Alice Springs and offices in Tennant Creek, Katherine, Nhulunbuy and Darwin. Staff in the regional offices are available to discuss any potential economic development project or idea.

Maningrida Study
The Maningrida Study is the first comprehensive study of a remote Indigenous community in the Territory that focuses on identifying the enterprise gap. This study presents an outline of the remote Indigenous community of Maningrida, Arnhem Land and also compares it to the three similar sizedᅠmainstream Australian communities of Gundagai, Casterton, Coonabarabran.

More specifically, it deals with various aspects of the community's economy, demography, and infrastructure, the end purpose being to take a 'whole of community' approach to the promotion
and facilitation of Indigenous enterprise and employment generation.

A key element of this analysis seeks to identify 'economic gaps' in order to underpin a package of potential measures intended to maximise the effectiveness of the work carried out by government and the private sector to grow the community's economy.

This study was reported on in the Australian by Paul Toohey. To read his article click here.
