Geophysics and Drilling Collaborations

geophysics and drilling collaborations program

Your next step to becoming Ore-Struck!

The Northern Territory Government has committed $2.4 million over three years to increase the intensity of exploration drilling and geophysics in greenfields areas of the Northern Territory.

This brings the Government’s investment in the “Bringing Forward Discovery” initiative to $14.4 million over four years, designed to attract new exploration investment and bring forward the next generation of major resource discoveries in the Territory.

The Geophysics and Drilling Collaborations program will co-fund selected exploration drilling and geophysical acquisition projects in greenfields areas where there is a paucity of geological information.

The NT Geological Survey, your experts on the ground, are here to work with you to make the next major discovery in Australia’s Northern Territory.

Successful programs will be those that:
  • have potential to increase exploration activity in under-explored or greenfields areas in the Northern Territory
  • contribute to the improved geological understanding of the regional geological framework, particularly in areas where there is little geoscientific information
  • add significant geological information about basement in areas of considerable cover
  • test innovative exploration concepts or use innovative exploration methodologies
  • have potential for discovery of a resource
  • resolve depth to geophysical targets or economic basement

geophysical survey programs

Applications for co-funding of geophysical surveys, particularly Bouguer gravity surveys are encouraged. Airborne radiometric and magnetic surveys will also be considered, particularly over remote areas that have had little exploration to date.

In addition to the selection criteria defined above, preferences for funding of geophysical survey proposals will be given for those:
  • programs that are of a regional scale and that cover multiple tenements
  • surveys that contribute significant new information to better understand the regional geology and assist in opening up new areas for exploration
  • surveys that are designed to generate specific new targets, based on a defined geological model for mineralisation
  • projects that dovetail with the NTGS’s “Bringing Forward Discovery” gravity programs
  • gravity programs that are planned on a 1km x 1km or greater survey spacing, or radiometric or magnetic programs that have a 200m line spacing
  • further detailed acquisition at a closer spacing will be at the applicant’s expense

drilling programs

The Territory Government will co-fund selected drilling programs that will provide geological information with the potential to open up new areas for exploration. Preference will be given to drilling that has the potential to contribute to an understanding of stratigraphy and mineralising processes in poorly explored areas.

In addition to the selection criteria defined above, preferences for funding of drilling proposals will be given for those:
  • that involves diamond drilling programs rather than other drilling techniques
  • where the proposal will test an innovative, soundly based mineralisation model
  • that include petrophysical and/or downhole geophysical measurements
  • that test basement beneath thick cover

funding criteria

Funding is available of up to $100,000 exclusive of GST per project or half of the direct project costs, which ever is less. Direct costs do not include administration or project management costs, land access, personnel, laboratory analysis or specific geoscientific analysis other than down hole surveys.

Applications will only be considered for areas where the applicant holds granted tenure or tenure that is likely to be granted within six months of the application for funding.
