Annual Research Report

[ 05/11/2009 ]

The Northern Territory Department of Regional Development, Primary Industry, Fisheries and Resources’ Primary Industries Group has released its Annual Research Report (ARR) for 2008-09.

The ARR provides a summary of new and continuing research work conducted during the 2008-09 financial year and includes results (where available) and general recommendations.

The report covers two main areas of research work, Plant Industries – crop, forestry and horticulture production, entomology and plant pathology and Animal Industries – cattle, pasture and buffalo production.

In 2008, the Territory pastoral industry turned off more than 500,000 cattle and the ARR includes summaries of current research projects that aim to address issues facing the industry such as improving breeding herd efficiency, grazing land management and increasing carrying capacity through infrastructure development.

The estimated gross value of plant industries in 2008-09 was expected to be $262 million which represented a 126% increase in the value of horticulture production and a 153% increase in field crop production over the past five years.

A copy of the Annual Research Report 2008-09 is sent to libraries and primary industry organisations in Australia and overseas. It is also available at www.primaryindustry.nt.gov.au
