Background

Historically there are three great cattle plagues: foot-and-mouth disease, rinderpest, and contagious bovine pleuropneumonia (CBPP). Incursion of all three have occurred on the Australian continent since European settlement, however only CBPP became established. CBPP was introduced to Australia with an infected heifer imported to Melbourne. The disease spread throughout Australia. CBPP was finally eradicated by a concerted national campaign. Australia declared freedom from the disease in 1973.
