The presentation introduces general considerations relating to the diagnosis of diseases in aquatic animals. Using actual examples, the presentation shows how history, environment, clinical signs and pathology are used as a basis for disease diagnosis, and how diagnosis is supported by the application of knowledge and research in specialised scientific disciplines including parasitology, virology, bacteriology and molecular diagnostics. The importance of maintaining contemporary diagnostic services is emphasised in relation to treatment, control and eradication of disease, biosecurity and resource protection, economic benefits to farmers, market access and national and international obligations.
