Welcome to the 4th Indigenous Economic Development Forum
‘Developing Our Future Together’

The 4th IED Forum focused on ways to build, support and strengthen Indigenous business partnerships and develop the capacity of stakeholders to achieve sustainable economic activity throughout the Northern Territory.
An exciting extra to this year’s forum was the launch of the
Indigenous Economic Development Strategy 2009 – 2012 by the Minister for Regional Development, Mr Karl Hampton MLA.
Over 300 delegates attended the Forum in Alice Springs, highlighting the increasing interest, commitment and support for this event over the past 6 years.
The program included Keynote addresses, Case Studies and Break Out Sessions targeted at all levels of business: Getting Started, Developing Small to Medium, Business on Country, Commercial Partnerships and sessions for people Working in Indigenous Economic Development.
As part of the Forum an Indigenous Business Expo provided Indigenous businesses with an opportunity to showcase their products and services offering Territory Indigenous business a great opportunity to build their customer base and develop partnership to help grow their businesses.
Over 30 Indigneous businesses from across the Territoryt ook the opportunity to learn about building their customer base and develop partnerships to grow their businesses.
The Host
The Northern Territory Government is pleased to host the IED (Indigenous Economic Development) Forum 2009, “Developing Our Future Together’, through the Department of Regional Development, Primary Industry, Fisheries and Resources (DRDPIFR) with guidance and assistance from a Reference Group specifically established for this purpose.
DRDPIFR has a critical role to play in supporting the Government’s priority of developing the Territory’s regions. The Department works through the Territory in partnership with the three levels of Government, business, industry and the community to stimulate and sustain economic growth to create sustainable regional communities.
Reference Group
The aim of the IED Reference Group is to provide a mechanism for the Department to obtain feedback from a representative group on a range of issues relating to implementation of the IED Forum 2009. The Group was formed in early 2009 and comprises representatives from:
- Australian Employment Covenant
- Charles Darwin University
- Department of Regional Development, Primary industry, Fisheries and Resources
- Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations
- Department of Families, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs
- Department of the Chief Minister
- Desert Knowledge Cooperative Research Centre
- Economic Development Officers
- Indigenous Business Australia
- Indigenous Business owners/operators
Objective
The 2009 IED Forum will provide opportunities for people to come together from a diverse range of industry and backgrounds to:
- Promote services and programs
- Share knowledge and experiences
- Explore opportunities, including business partnerships
To achieve sustainable economic outcomes for Indigenous Territorians.
Delegate Profile
The Forum is targeted at Indigenous and non-Indigenous stakeholders in economic development and those who have an impact on the emerging Indigenous business landscape.
It is anticipated that the Forum will attract delegates, including:
- Indigenous organisation representatives
- Small to medium enterprise owner/operators
- Micro and home-based business owner/operators
- Corporate organisations
- Industry association representatives
- Shire and Council representatives
- Territory, State and Federal Government key decision makers
