A quarantine area covering all of Darwin, Palmerston and the Litchfield Shire has been gazetted until 30th June 2007. This is a further precaution against Grapevine Leaf Rust spreading beyond the known infected area.
It prohibits the movement of all grapevine plant material either into, within or out of these areas. Planting new vines or re-planting cuttings from existing vines is also prohibited during this time. This prohibition does NOT include fresh grapes, leaves in brine or other processed grape material.
Signs are in place on the Arnhem and Stuart Highways until the end of the quarantine period.
All Northern Territory nurseries have been alerted about the quarantine zone gazettal and have been asked to help in the campaign by adhering to the quarantine restrictions.
Nurseries wanting more information can contact the Chief Plant Quarantine Inspector at the Department of Primary Industry, Fisheries and Mines, telephone +61 8 8999 2337.
