Learning the Language of the Land

[ 10/08/2009 ]

Businesses and service providers that deal with people from the pastoral industry are invited to a free workshop to assist them to do business with pastoralists and gain a greater understanding of how they operate.

"Often pastoralists seem to be speaking a language of their own, with most of the conversation focused on the weather and cattle, lately though, there has been a new topic talked about; grazing land management," Grazing Land Management Officer, Ellena Hannah said.

The Katherine Grazing Land Management Workshop will introduce GLM tools and principles to those people who work with pastoralists including stock and station agents, Agri-business lenders, NRM and Landcare professionals.

This insight into what it takes to run and manage a property will assist them to understand the language used by cattle producers when describing their requirements.

"If pastoralists and service providers are able to clearly understand each other it will assist in business negotiations and enable them to work more effectively in achieving their goals," Ms Hannah said.

"Talking the same talk leads to all of industry being able to work together to maintain the productivity of our natural resource base.

"The workshop will outline some key principles of grazing land management systems which are becoming a key focus for many pastoralists as they work toward optimising land condition, production and profit," Ms Hannah said.

The free Grazing Land Management workshop will be held on the 10th and 11th of September at the Katherine Research Station and people interested in attending should contact Ellena Hannah on (08) 8973 9749, registrations close on August 28th.

The Katherine Grazing Land Management workshop is a Meat and Livestock Australia product and is being delivered through a partnership between the Department of Regional Development, Primary Industry, Fisheries and Resources and the Northern Territory Cattlemen's Association funded by the Department of Agriculture Fisheries and Forestry Caring for our Country Program.
