Situation Update
On Friday, 31 July 2009 the Australian Chief Veterinary Officer, Dr Andy Carroll was notified of confirmed cases of influenza in a commercial pig property.
The herd of approximately 2000 animals is located on a property in central west New South Wales.
Laboratory tests have confirmed that the pigs are experiencing the same virus that is effecting the human population at present – pandemic influenza (H1N1) 2009.
The infected property was immediately placed under quarantine, and on 3 August a management plan was agreed to which will direct efforts to eradicate the virus from the herd on this property.
