Ord Development Project

  • Cross Border legislation and operations study has been completed and a final review of the study is being undertaken to examine the recommendations.
  • NT poised to engage in Native Title negotiations for the Knox, Weaber and Keep River Plains.

On 23 November 2012 the Ord Development Project was awarded Major Project status.

The project, which is the first agricultural development in the Northern Territory to achieve Major Project Status, is coordinated by the Department of Primary Industry and Fisheries.

Chief Executive, Alister Trier leads a cross agency Taskforce to coordinate the project within the NT Government.

An Ord Development Unit has been established under the Directorship of Lorraine Corowa who reports directly to the Chief Executive.

The opportunity to expand the Ord River Irrigation Scheme into the Northern Territory has been made possible by the investment of the West Australian and Australian Government’s in irrigation channels, roads and supporting social infrastructure in the East Kimberley region.  More information can be found on the following website: http://www.dsd.wa.gov.au/8161.aspx

The areas for development in the Northern Territory include land in the Knox Plain and Keep River which adjoin the WA/NT border.

A Memorandum of Understanding between the Territory, Australian and Westralian Governments was signed on 23 November 2012. This MOU demonstrates the commitment of the three governments to work together to facilitate this development opportunity.
