The Berrimah Veterinary Laboratories (BVL) are the only veterinary laboratories in the Northern Territory of Australia and are the most northern on the Australian continent. The next nearest veterinary laboratories are at least 2000km away.
The core functions of BVL are the diagnosis and surveillance of, as well as research into, animal diseases. The unique location of BVL also gives it a sentinel status. Consequently, a lot of activity concerns the monitoring for incursion of diseases exotic to Australia under Australian federal programs such as the National Arbovirus Monitoring Program (NAMP) and the Northern Australian Quarantine Strategy (NAQS).
BVL has expertise PCR technology, as well as in the traditional disciplines of a diagnostic veterinary laboratory such as gross pathology, histopathology, clinical pathology, microbiology and parasitology. As most exotic diseases are viral in nature, BVL also has a strong virology section.
The Berrimah Veterinary Laboratories have gained quality assurance accreditation through the National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA). Staff numbers are 23, and are made up of one or more professionals in each of the disciplines, and technical and administrative support staff.
