Spray Drift

Communication between neighbours is essential to the development of cooperative spray management residues programs and reduces the chance of conflict. Parties should agree on a method of communication. Persons spraying should contact their neighbours, especially down wind neighbours, before the start of the spray season. The spray operator should provide neighbours with additional information they request about the spray operation.

A property management plan developed prior to the planting of any crop should take into account the requirement to spray agricultural chemical products. Before spraying, a spray drift awareness zone that identifies all sensitive areas should be established around the property.

It is strongly recommended that any person intending to spray agricultural chemical products complete the Chemcert or SMARTtrain courses.

Industry is encouraged to self regulate and if communication difficulties arise between neighbours it is worthwhile to contact the Northern Territory Horticulture Association on +61 8 8983 3233.

Relevant Legislation:

  • The Waste Management and Pollution Control Act
  • The Work Health Act

The Agricultural and Veterinary Chemicals (Control of Use) Act provides for the protection of persons, the environment and trade. It provides penalties for damage caused by spray drift to agricultural produce and land.

Complaints about spray drift should be made to the Pollution Response Line: Freecall 1800 064 567.

Complaints concerning damage to agricultural produce, animals or agricultural land should be directed in writing to the Chemical Adviser, PO Box 3000, Darwin NT 0801 Telephone +61 8 89992016.
