The 'Control of Use' Act includes severe penalties for persons that manufacture or distribute fertilisers that contain contaminant concentrations above those set in the Regulations to the Act. The Act provides for maximum allowable concentrations of cadmium, lead and mercury in fertilisers.
A national working party is developing new national standards for a wide range of contaminants. When these standards are available Biosecurity and Product Integrity division will work with industry to adopt these into Territory legislation.
