Australian Wildlife Health Network (AWHN)

The Australian Wildlife Health Network (AWHN)was established to co-ordinate the management of surveillance, investigation and response to wildlife and feral animal disease events across Australia following a series of mass mortalities in wildlife, emerging diseases associated with Australian wildlife, and the increasing threat of wildlife disease to human health, livestock health, aquaculture, biodiversity and trade

The national network is managed under the Wildlife Exotic Disease Preparedness Program . Departmental veterinarians and livestock biosecurity officers work with the Department of Natural Resources, Environment, the Arts and Sport (NRETAS) officers and North Australian Quarantine Strategy (NAQS) officers to investigate mass mortalities in wildlife and feral animals.

Wildlife Health Information System (WHIS)

Wildlife health surveillance and diagnostic information is collated in a national database. Weekly electronic digests are generated that provide a summary of current Australian wildlife health information. The department reports significant disease events occurring in NT wildlife and feral animals to the network.
