The cattle tick (Rhipicephalus microplus previously Boophilus microplus) is a serious economic pest of the Northern Territory cattle industry. Livestock production can be significantly reduced if cattle tick infestations are not managed effectively. The cattle tick is also responsible for transmitting other disease causing organisms to cattle. The cattle tick can transmit blood-borne tick fever organisms which cause sickness and death in cattle.
To reduce the costs to the NT livestock industry, DRDPIFR in partnership with the livestock industries of the Northern Territory aim to control the distribution of cattle tick within the Northern Territory by regulated movement control of livestock and eradication of cattle ticks in declared free areas.
