Combined Mango Timing Forecast:

Key Points for the National Mango Crop Forecast, 16  December 2007:

  • There has been no significant change since the last forecast.
  • Mangoes from far north and north-west Queensland are in the market along with early fruit from the Burdekin and Bowen.
  • This is inline with the forecast harvest date for the Burdekin season.
  • The Darwin crop is completed.
  • The Katherine harvest is almost finished.
  • The estimate of the Total NT crop was between 1.6 -1.8 million trays. The final total is going to be much higher than this with 2.2 million trays already harvested up to 19 November.
  • The NT main harvest season has run an extra week longer in both Darwin and Katherine than the forecasted 5 - 6 weeks, from 12 October to 23 November.
  • The Kununurra harvest is almost completed with only the later varieties left to pick.
  • The predicted yields in Kununurra of about 50-60% full capacity seem to be more accurate than the NT volume prediction.
  • This pattern seems to be repeated in the major north Queensland regions. While most areas reported very strong flowering the final yields may not live up to early expectations.
  • Mid and later mango varieties are well represented in the Mareeba data.

Predicted Dates for Dry Matter Testing:

Dry Matter Testing for Mangoes:

    • When a mango has 14% dry matter it is considered mature enough to pick and will ripen properly with a good flavour.
    • The procedure set out in the attached Information Sheet IS31 shows how dry matter percentage can be calculated simply and accurately.
