Department of Primary Industry and Fisheries

The Primary Industries Division delivers strategic services that support profitable and sustainable primary production.

It works in partnership with producers, industry bodies, community groups and related agencies to promote industry growth and ensure access to markets for animals, plants, and animal and plant products.

The main services are:

inspection, treatment and certification services for animals and animal products;
inspection, treatment and certification for plant and plant products;
research and extension programs to help producers sustainably lift crop and stock yields and capacity;
development of best-practice farming methods and new crop for specific environments;
Indigenous pastoral and horticultural development;
biosecurity and laboratory services for plant and animal health; and
monitoring of, and response to, emergency and endemic animal and plant pests and diseases.

	Annual Report 2011-12 (Department of Resources) Our Annual Report describes the achievements, performance and priorities of the department's staff during 2011-12. It also corroborates our mission to work with our partners to stimulate and sustain our resource-based industries throughout the Territory.
	Annual Research Achievements Report 2011-12 - Primary Industries Since the mid 1980s this department has published an annual publication on the work of its science and technical staff. This Annual Research Achievements Report provides a summary of the R&D effort in primary industries by the science officers during the 2011-12 financial year.
	Annual Extension Report 2011 - Primary Industries The 2011 edition of the Annual Extension Report is now available. This publication is a summary of the extension work carried out by the Primary Industries Division of DoR. The extension services provide critical information to industry and reinforce established best practices. The NT Government has made a commitment to NT agriculture to maintain an effective research, development and extension service to its rural industries.
	Economic Outlook 2011 The new edition of the Northern Territory Rural Industries and Fisheries Economic Outlook for 2011 is now available. This document is produced annually and provides production and value of production statistics on past, current and future output by Northern Territory primary industries. In addition, the document provides other economic statistics covering contributions to Gross State Product, comparisons across industries and employment figures.
	Primary Industry and Fisheries Overview and Outlook 2011 Welcome to the third edition of the Northern Territory Primary Industries and Fisheries Overview and Outlook. This document provides a comprehensive information and analyses of statistics related to the NT Primary Industry Sectors than the Economic Outlook 2011. It is based on actual statistics up to 2010-11 and gives forecast figures to 2016. In addition the document provides information on NT major trading partners and links to other useful publications and websites.
	Projects and Partnerships - Primary Industries Extension Strategy DoR has a Vision of: "A flourishing economy underpinned by profitable and sustainable resource-based industries." DoR will achieve this, in part, by providing targeted extension services in primary industries. The Primary Industries Strategy is available for viewing here.
	Vegetable Growing Manual A guide to vegetable growing in the semi-arid tropics of the Top End of the Northern Territory. The manual covers enterprise planning, maintaining soil structure, growing a crop, managing pests and disease, and cooling and handling vegetables after harvest.
