New Geology Map to Assist Mineral Explorers

[ 16/12/2008 ]

16 December, 2008

A new geology map covering the entire continent will assist mineral explorers and mining companies when looking at geological features that cross jurisdictional borders.

The new map, produced at 1:1 million scale has been compiled using information from the State and Northern Territory Geological Surveys that has been combined for the first time.

The map was produced by Geoscience Australia and should assist mineral explorers and mining companies, particularly when looking at mineral-rich provinces that cross borders, such as the Mount Isa region which extends from Queensland into the Northern Territory.

Other areas such as the untapped Musgrave region which straddles Western Australia, South Australia and the Northern Territory will also be easier to view as the information is seamless between states and territories.

The new map removes mismatches of mapping across jurisdictions and between maps of different ages and quality.

The information associated with the new map will be provided to the international OneGeology Project as the Australian contribution to the venture – www.onegeology.org or visit www.ga.gov.au for more information on the map
