The Northern Territory Government Geothermal Energy Act commenced operation on 1 December 2009.
Applications are invited under Section 12(1) of the Geothermal Energy Act for the grant of geothermal exploration permits. Applications are to be made in accordance with Section 35 of the Geothermal Energy Act. Consideration of an application for the grant of a geothermal exploration permit shall take into account the adequacy of the work programs relative to the whole of the area applied for, the applicant's technical and financial ability to undertake the work, and the geological rationale on which the application is based.
Applicants should make themselves aware of the existence of any areas which have the potential to restrict exploration activities such as reserves declared under the Geothermal Energy Act and the requirements to comply with the terms of the Aboriginal Land Rights (NT) Act and the Native Title Act. Note also that special conditions apply to applications over parks and reserves declared under the Territory Parks and Wildlife Conservation Act or the National Parks and Wildlife Conservation Act.
Lodgement of Applications: Applications, together with supporting data, are required to be lodged on the approved form and accompanied by a fee of $5,000.00 per application.
Acceptable payment methods include:
- Personal cheque, Australian bank cheque or Money Order made payable to the Receiver of Territory Monies;
- Visa, or MasterCard charge; EFTPOS;

- Cash payment (only available for applications that are lodged in person).
