The Department of Mines and Energy, administers and regulates energy tenure and energy activities (which include petroleum and geothermal resource exploration and development and oil and gas transmission pipeline construction and operation) in Northern Territory onshore and coastal waters areas.
The Energy Directorate employs assessments, inspections and audits to ensure compliance with legislation and promotes use of best practices in regard to system integrity and environmental management in all phases of projects (design, construction, operation and decommissioning).
Regulation of work health and safety for mining and onshore petroleum and geothermal activities is the responsibility of NT WorkSafe. This responsibility extends to NT Coastal Waters within the 3 mile nautical limit.
Incidents involving health and safety issues only are handled by NT WorkSafe. Where incidents involve both safety and environmental aspects, the Department of Mines and Energy and NT WorkSafe ensures each other is notified.
The regulation of work health and safety for offshore activities outside the 3 mile nautical limit is the responsibility of the National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Environmental Management Authority (NOPSEMA).
