Individual Site Information

Arltunga
Alluvial gold may be found in the alluvium/colluvium areas shown on the map and in Mission Creek within the Fossicking Area boundary.
Access is from the Ross Highway south of Alice Springs. Travel 1.5km south from Heavitree Gap along the Stuart Highway, then turn left onto the Ross Highway.

Central Harts Range
The Central Harts Range Fossicking Area lies due south of the Atitjere Community, and encompasses the abandoned mica mines of Mount Palmer.

Harts Range West
Well-shaped specimen garnets up to a few centimetres in diameter may be obtained, together with smaller fragments of transparent, dark reddish-brown material suitable for cutting.

Mud Tank Zircon Field
The main diggings cover the crest of Zircon Hill, which is capped with magnetite and weathered calcite. The zircons are obtained by digging and sieving (wet and dry). The zircons here are orange, pale brown, pink, purplish shades, colourless, yellow and parti-coloured, and may occur as small, double-terminated crystals or chips.

Old Well Station
Green Tourmaline, Aquamarine, Tourmaline, Mica, Feldspar, Clear Quartz, and Smoky Quartz.

Warrego
Gold occurs in the surface soil and can be found by dry panning. Metal detectors have been used successfully in the area. Mining leases, marked by corner pegs, exist in the area and are out of bounds for fossickers.

Wave Hill and Extensions
Extensive areas of this region are underlain by volcanic rocks (basalt). These basalts contain geodes which weather out of the lava to form hollow lava-encrusted boulders with their inner surfaces encrusted with crystals. The geodes can be found scattered on the ground and in the soil.
