[ 10/06/2008 ]

Mines and Energy Minister Chris Natt today congratulated mining company OM (Manganese) Ltd for exporting its one millionth tonne of manganese ore from its Bootu Creek mine near Tennant Creek.

"The Territory’s mining and energy production and processing is set to grow by over 30 per cent next financial year to $7.5 billion and is now worth more than 40 per cent of our Gross State Product," Mr Natt said.

"OM (Manganese) Ltd will play a major role in increasing the Territory's mining productivity with forward projections for manganese ore exports looking strong.

"OM (Manganese) Ltd has an active exploration program of $10 million for 2008 to extend mine life beyond the current estimated eight to nine years - and future production expansions are under consideration.

"OM (Manganese) Ltd commissioned its plant in June 2006 and was the first mining company to use the Alice Springs to Darwin railway.

"Manganese is one of the most widely used alloy elements in the world and is essential to the manufacturing of steel with OM (Manganese) Ltd's key export market being China.

"I congratulate OM (Manganese) Ltd for reaching the one million tonne mark as it optimises production and works towards mining and exporting 700,000 tonnes in 2008.

"I wish OM (Manganese) Ltd every success as it continues to play a strong role in the Territory’s economy."
