NTGS has an active SHRIMP and laser ICPMS geochronology program supporting NTGS regional geoscientific investigations and mapping programs across the Territory.
NTGS and the Australian Federal Government's Geoscience Australia act cooperatively to undertake U-Pb geochronological dating of samples from the Territory under the National Geoscience Agreement.
Geoscience Australia conduct geochronological analyses on zircon and monazite separates from samples collected in NTGS field projects using a Sensitive High Resolution Ion Microprobe (SHRIMP) and provide interpretations of these data.
NTGS together with the School of Earth Sciences at the University of Melbourne undertake Lu-Hf multi-collector laser ablation ICPMS geochronology of samples from the Territory.
Zircon is the major reservoir of Hf in most crustal rocks. Zircon Hf isotopic data is collected to constrain the timing and nature of continental crust growth in order to better understand processes important to the geological evolution of the NT.
