The Northern Territory is largely underexplored in relation to nickel. The only defined nickel resource is included as part of the polymetallic Browns deposit, which is currently being developed in the Pine Creek Orogen. Considerable potential for this metal in the Northern Territory is indicated by widespread occurrences of mafic and ultramafic rocks in the Arunta Region and Musgrave Province, as well as extensive basalts of the Antrim Plateau Volcanics, surrounding the Victoria-Birrindudu basins. Nickel values of up to 1000 ppm were also recently reported from ultramafic rocks in the Litchfield Province of the Pine Creek Orogen.
