Submission Instructions:
For all mineral core and cuttings and petroleum well core/cuttings and fluid samples, please make contact with the Core Facility Manager prior to submission.
Mineral Core and Cuttings:
Offer of mineral core for selection
- The Northern Territory Mining Act stipulates that all core recovered from a ceased title must be offered to the Director Northern Territory Geological Survey (NTGS) for selection and possible retention. The decision to accept drill material into the collection is at the discretion of the Director NTGS.
- NTGS will not normally require rotary drilling cuttings (RAB, RC, vacuum, air core) to be referred.
Mineral core offer form
Submission of selected core
- Core/cuttings must be submitted to the Core Facility nearest to drilling site, either Darwin or Alice Springs.
- Core must be submitted on Zincalume® metric trays (400 x 1000mm) one side painted with a Durebild STE two-pack paint (Dulux) or equivalent. Plastic core trays are not acceptable.
- Trays must be labelled using a black Artline 400XF or equivalent paint marker. Labelling must include hole name and core intervals with the start of the cored interval marked with an arrow on the top corner of the tray. eg. DD97MC1 Interval 1-5m.
- Core containing radioactive mineralisation (e.g. bright yellow mineralised sections), or core from known uranium provinces, should be tested and the measurements recorded in microSv/hr above background. Note: Radiation levels of all core will be checked upon receipt at the Core Store.
- The transportation of core and/or cuttings to the nominated core store, including costs, shall be the sole responsibility of the submitting company.
Minerals core submission guidelines
Petroleum Drill Cuttings, Core and Fluid Samples:
- Petroleum exploration companies must submit samples in accordance with the relevant onshore or offshore legislation. Please refer to the legislation or contact the Core Facility Manager for more information.
- Onshore core/cuttings must be submitted to the Core Facility nearest to drilling site, either Darwin or Alice Springs.
- Offshore core/cuttings must be submitted to the Darwin Core Facility.
- A Sample Submission Form must be attached to each shipment of cuttings.
- The transportation of core and/or cuttings to the nominated core store, including costs, shall be the sole responsibility of the submitting company.

Access to Core:
COREDAT lists all core/cuttings held by the Northern Territory Geological Survey and contains summary information.
