Recreational Fishing

Welcome to the Recreational Fishing section of the Fisheries Division, Department of Primary Industry and Fisheries website.

Recreational Fishing is an important part of the great Territory lifestyle and it is important that all fishers play their part to ensure the long-term sustainability of our world class fisheries.

These pages provide Territorians and visitors with a comprehensive guide to the recreational fishing rules and regulations in the Northern Territory.

Specific queries can be directed to the Department's Recreational Fishing Unit either through GPO Box 3000 Darwin NT 0801 or telephone +61 8 8999 2144.

You do not require a recreational fishing licence in the Northern Territory, however a large portion of the Territory's intertidal waters lie over Aboriginal land and recreational fishers should respect and recognise the cultural importance of these waters to traditional owners.

Permits are required to enter Aboriginal Land and may also be required for access to tidal waters overlying Aboriginal land for fishing purposes.

Information on permit requirements is available from the Northern Land Council on 1800 645 299 or by visiting the website www.nlc.org.au. For maps and updated information regarding the fishing permits visit the website www.fishing.nt.gov.au
