Don't Let Ferals Escape

[ 09/09/2008 ]

An eradication program to remove hundreds of tiny feral aquarium fish from an inner Darwin creek will once again be undertaken by the Department of Regional Development, Primary Industry, Fisheries and Resources (DRDPIFR).

“The feral fish are known as guppies and were found in Racecourse Creek behind the Darwin Turf Club,” Fisheries technical officer, Alex Beatty said.

“This is the third time that we have had to remove feral fish from this waterway and we urge all Territorians to stock their ponds and tanks with native fish and plants.

“During the Wet season, heavy rain can result in overflow from backyard ponds carrying non-native fish and plants into Territory waterways.

“Guppies are a non-native aquarium fish that compete with native species for food and space; they have the potential to displace other species by competition or the introduction of parasites or disease.

“DRDPIFR staff will use proven eradication techniques.

“Once the absence of the pest fish is confirmed by follow-up surveys, and water quality is suitable, we will re-stock the creek with native species.

“Territorians with backyard ponds are asked to lower the water levels before the Wet and preferably stock them with native fish and plant species.

“Never dispose of fish or plants into Territory waterways, as not only is it an offence, but it could threaten our natural environment,” Mr Beatty said.

Releasing exotic (non-native) aquatic life into a body of water other than an aquarium is prohibited under the NT Fisheries Act and Regulations and is punishable by fines of up to $20,000.
