Quaterly Update

The Northern Territory Government is undertaking this survey to collect data on recreational fishing catch, participation, fishing effort and expenditure from both local and visiting anglers.
The survey is being conducted in three parts.

2. Diary survey

What happens with the information?

1. Screening interviews

These are underway now. This short telephone survey will identify fishing households and collect basic demographic information.

We ask that you help by getting involved and answering the questions when someone calls.
(This should only take about 3 -7 minutes, depending on whether you fish or not.) [top]

2. Diary survey

The diary survey involves an interviewer regularly contacting respondents to collect information on fishing and fishing related expenditure.

Commencing in April 2009, this survey will be conducted over a twelve month period, concluding in March 2010. [top]

3. Attitudinal survey

This occurs at the end of the diary survey and is used to determine respondent awareness and opinions on a range of recreational fisheries issues. [top]

How are survey respondents selected?

Territory residents as well as visitors are being asked to get involved. Local survey respondents are selected from a stratified random sampling of the “White Pages” telephone listings.

If you are contacted by the survey team please play your part and participate! [top]

Boat Ramp surveys

Starting in April, visitor information concerning recreational fishing will be compiled using on-site surveys at boat ramps and other strategic points across the NT.

We ask that you co-operate with our trained interviewers.

You’ll recognise them by their distinctive orange shirts and hats.

The information gathered is essential for the sustainable growth and protection of the Territory’s valuable recreational fishing experience and lifestyle. All information will be kept confidential. [top]

What happens with the information?

At the completion of the survey period the data will be processed, extrapolated and analysed before a final report is produced. The final report from the recreational fishing survey will be available in 2010.

The data collected from this survey will inform decision making for the future of this vital Territory resource. [top]
