Black jewfish (Protonibea diacanthus) research in the Northern Territory

Introduction

Black jewfish are a popular and abundant aggregating species found in NT coastal waters. These large fish are highly revered by commercial, recreational and indigenous fishers alike. However, very little is known about the life history and biology of these fish. In an effort to alleviate this deficit of information, NT Fisheries is coordinating a series of research projects focusing on black jewfish.

Project partners include the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS), Charles Darwin Univeristy (CDU), the Tasmanian Aquaculture and Fisheries Institute (TAFI), and the Fisheries and Research Development Corporation (FRDC). Commercial fishers and fishing tour operators provide invaluable support by providing access to their catch for sampling.

Recent and current projects include:

  • Aggregation Site Identification Project
  • Aggregation Site Mapping Project
  • Barotrauma Project
  • Morphometrics Project
  • Otolith Ageing Project
  • Otolith Microchemistry Project
  • Reproductive Biology Project
  • Tagging (Acoustic) Project
