Industry Support

The Aquaculture Branch provides a range of services to support industry. These include aquaculture planning, extension, advice to investors, aquatic animal health (in collaboration with the Berrimah Veterinary Laboratory), development of policy and training.

Some of the outputs from aquaculture planning include the identification of sites for aquaculture, and in collaboration with the Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Environment ensuring the ecological sustainable development of all aquaculture sectors.

In assisting investors, a case management approach is used, facilitating interactions with a range of Government organisations which regulate many aspects of aquaculture industry development.

Routine contact is maintained with all aquaculture licenses by aquaculture staff and extension services are available on request, within the limited resources of the branch.

The Darwin Aquaculture Centre works closely with the Charles Darwin University providing work experience for their aquaculture students.

The Aquaculture Branch works in collaboration with industry on matters of policy affecting the industry. The Ministerial Advisory Committee on Aquaculture in the Northern Territory (MACANT) is the industry-government forum for aquaculture.

The NT Government has established modern fish nursery facilities to support the development of barramundi aquaculture.
Satellite imagery is being used to assist with the identification of suitable sites for aquaculture.
