Genetag Research Project Features 

From the North Pole to Northern Australia

In the tropical waters of Northern Australia, a group of scientists from the Northern Territory and Queensland are applying a novel concept, the genetic tagging of fish. With previous genetic tagging studies focussing on the likes of bears and wolves in the Arctic Circle, the Genetag Research Project is quite unlike anything undertaken before. 2004 Report to AFANT

It has been a very exciting year for everyone involved with the Genetag Research Project. A number of milestones have been achieved in the last twelve months, and a large part of this success is due to the ongoing support from the Amateur Fishermen's Association of the Northern Territory. [more]

A MACnificent Month

In a world first for the Northern Territory, the first recapture of a genetically tagged fish was confirmed this month. This marked a significant development in the Genetag Research Project. The Spanish mackerel was 'genetagged' on both occasions using lures designed by Fisheries Group staff to collect tissue samples, without having to bring the fish to the boat. [more]
