The Fisheries Research Genetag Team is excited about recent news from the Molecular Fisheries Lab in Brisbane.
The Genetag Team's geneticists are putting their new genotyping facility at the University of Queensland to good use. Of the 527 samples processed at the new facility, 19 are from recaptures or from fish that have been genetagged on more than one occasion. This follows our first recapture of a genetagged fish, detected last year, more than 100 nautical miles from where it was originally tagged. These are excellent results. [more]
The Genetag Research Project continues to attract accolades with three major awards going to the team in the last month. Dr. Rik Buckworth, Charles Bryce and Adrian Donati won the prestigious Tropical Knowledge Innovation Award from a field of 14 finalists in the NT Research and Innovation Awards held in May. [more]

Australian cricket legend, Dennis Lillee, is set to get amongst the action during the 2nd Spanish Mackerel Tagging Tournament. The Tagging Tournament will be held on the 4-5th and the 18-19th of June, with Dennis joining us on the water for the first of the two weekends. [more]

In order to establish how the novel concept of genetagging compares to conventional tagging practices, project staff are coordinating a unique combination tagging trial. A group of dedicated recreational fishers are assisting, and over 300 Spanish mackerel have now been both genetagged and conventionally tagged. Already, three Spanish mackerel recaptures have been reported. [more]
Everyone associated with the Genetag Research Project has a good reason to feel very proud and excited this month; the eagerly anticipated recapture of a 'genetagged' fish has just been confirmed. The recapture of a genetically tagged fish, which is believed to be a world first, resulted in a frenzy of local and international media attention focusing on the project. The Genetag Research Project recently launched a new 4.9 metre centre console vessel thanks to the support of GS Marine and Suzuki Outboards. Named the 'Gene Genie' by Fisheries Minister Kon Vatskalis, the vessel will be used extensively by the Genetag Research Project as well as a variety of other projects. [more]
The Inaugural Spanish Mackerel Tagging Tournament was a huge success with over 150 Spaniards combination tagged over the two weekends. Thanks to the overwhelming support of the tournament's sponsors, some fantastic prices were up for grabs in the 2004 Spanish Mackerel Tagging Tournament. [more]
