Fish of the Northern Territory

Spanish mackerel

The narrow-barred Spanish mackerel is large and fast pelagic predator that is abundant in the tropical and sub-tropical waters of the Indo-west Pacific. [more]

Barramundi

Barramundi, the fishing icon of the Top End, draws local, interstate and international anglers to the Northern Territory in droves every year. [more]

Jewfish

The black jewfish is a member of the Sciaenidae family, which is also known worldwide as croaker or drum due to the distinct drumming noise it makes. [more]

Mudcrabs

Male and female mud crabs may be taken in Northern Territory waters and minimum carapace width size limits of 13 cm and 14 cm apply respectively. [more]

Snappers

These fish grow to around 8 kg and are superb eating. They are distinguished by a prominent fingerprint-like mark below the dorsal fin similar to Russell's snapper. This mark fades as the fish grows. [more]
