Future Leaders: Developing and Sustaining their Contribution to Good Governance

Ms Kylie Bloomfield

Young Indigenous people have much to offer as future leaders for their people, and for the Northern Territory and nation as a whole. But there are some important questions and areas of support that need to be explored, in order to ensure that the next generations of Indigenous Territorians can do the best job.

Many things are changing in the Territory, and there are old and new governance challenges facing our people. In this presentation we will talk about the role that emerging leaders could play to assist in facing these challenges—in our families and communities, with senior leaders and organisations, and with government and policy thinking.

In the past it has not been so clear what kinds of roles emerging leaders could play in the processes of building more effective governance for our own people. But today, there are more areas where we can work together to get better outcomes on the ground. We will put forward some ideas for how future leaders can be better supported and mentored, for how we could play a more effective role now, and in the future.
