The Research and Innovation Board and Fund play an important role in the development of the Territory's knowledge economy and influence the way science, research and innovation translate into a prosperous future for all Territorians.
The Northern Territory Government knows that research and innovation can supply the knowledge and know - how needed to develop a thriving and sustainable economy and community.
In 2004 the Government demonstrated its commitment to supporting and stimulating research and innovation in the Northern Territory with the establishment of the Northern Territory Research and Innovation Board and Fund.

During 2007, the Victorian Government led a national process, involving State and Territory Governments as well as national business and industry councils, to develop an agreed National Innovation Agenda proposal to present to the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) with the goal of encouraging a whole-of-Australia approach to strengthen our innovation system.
The Commonwealth Government fast tracked this plan by announcing the national innovation system review (Minister Carr, 22 January 2008).
Hon Kon Vatskalis MLA, Minister for Business and Economic Development supported the Hon Gavin Jennings MLC, Victorian Minister for Innovation in presenting Progressing a Shared National Innovation Agenda to Senator the Hon Kim Carr as collaborative input into the review of the National Innovation System.
